DATA CLUSTER MEETUP

JOIN US FOR A DATA MEETUP

March 14 - 6PM @ Opal Divine's, 700 W 6th St 78701

Last year a twitter conversation among three data geeks accidentally turned into a 30+ person data meetup — with no planning, nowhere near enough chairs, and yet a total success. Clearly, the web's largest yearly convention needs a gathering of data geeks.

So here it is, bigger, better, and with free food. We're still keeping it simple, though: get a whole bunch of really smart data geeks together, set up group discussions and a round of lightning talks, but leave the majority of time for people who admire each other's work to meet and exchange ideas.

ALMOST SOLD OUT - RSVP soon! Data nerds taking over Austin!

Act I: Non-relational Database Smackdown

Stu Hood of the Cassandra project will lead a discussion that will debate the merits of various non-relational databases.

FACING OFF:

  • Cassandra core team committer Stu Hood (Rackspace)
  • CouchDB core team committer Jan Lehnardt (Apache)
  • MongoDB evangelist Wynn Netherland (Orrka, TweetCongress)
  • ... expert in another scalable DB tech? If you're brave enough to step up, email us.

Act II: Birds of a Feather:

We'll have 5 birds-of-a-feather sessions, with discussions led by rockstars in each topic:

  • Operations (managing data) -- led by Harper Reed of Rackspace and ex-Threadless
  • Analytics (exploring data) -- led by Toby Jungen, NLP + Hadoop expert and chief architect at Swingly
  • Web Apps (humanizing data) -- led by Joe West of knowmore
  • Visualization (seeing data) - led by Cyborg Anthropologist and Dataviz Curator Amber Case
  • Open Data (freeing data) -- led by Gil Elbaz, Founder/CEO of Factual and CommonCrawl founder and Dhruv Bansal, rockstar physicist and cofounder of Infochimps

Otherwise: Mingling

The majority of time, though, will be left free for people to talk, eat, and network.

MAP & DIRECTIONS

Opal Divine's is convenient to the convention center but outside the realm of immediate madness. It features great selections of beer and scotch, and a waitstaff knowlegable about each.

  • To get there, take a quick walk straight down 6th street.
  • …or an even faster bus ride from 6th & Trinity at 6:05, drops off in front of Opal Divine's. Pull the cord when you see the “Katz's” sign.
  • …or an even funner pedicab. You pay only by tip; agree on a price in advance.
